#SamGabeHSAU -

Being a boyfriend is awesome, but it doesn't make it any easier to wait through nights where he knows - knows! - that Gabriel is sitting at his own desk, surrounded by textbooks and library books and notes, thinking of him too.

Gabriel calls him a couple times, at ten or eleven o'clock, and Sam jumps to answer it so Mom doesn't get to it first. Damn it, he needs a cell phone.

At some point the conversation dries up and Sam's heart starts pounding, filling the silence at least in his own body. "Sorry," he says nervously. "I, uh, don't know what to say."

"Neither do I," Gabriel says, and his voice is low and kind of halting. "But I want to stay on the phone with you anyway. Weird, huh?"

Sam laughs, a warm sound that feels like a fire burning deep in his chest. "Not weird. I'm still trying to figure out how we can have homeroom and lunch together and talk on the phone and everything and still--"

He breaks off. He was about to say "still I miss you," but he doesn't have the courage.

Then Gabriel's voice comes over the line, soft and smoky. "And still it's not enough."

Sam thinks his whole heart is coming out his throat, his exhalation is so hot. "Yeah," he manages to say.

There's pleasant silence on the line. Sam hears the soft hitch of Gabriel's breathing. Yearning fills him, and he closes his eyes.

But a conversation with Gabriel never follows a logical course, and all at once his voice is on the line, barking and sharp. "That's it, I'm gonna do it."

"Huh?"

He can practically hear Gabriel's grin over the line. "I've been meaning to check something out for a while now. I'll tell you about it tomorrow when I know more."

Try as he might, Sam can't drag another word out of him about it.
