#SamGabeHSAU -

Sam spends most of that night wondering what the hell Gabriel is up to. Knowing him, it's a surprise, and a good one at that. But Gabriel hasn't given him much to go on.

He said he was going to "see about" something, right? That or "look into" something. Sam keeps remembering it differently. Well, either of those means an unanswered question. Which means Gabriel has to ask someone for something. Permission, maybe?

By the morning Sam has not only come up with a theory but also thoroughly convinced himself it's true. Complete with supporting facts made up out of thin air.

This is Sam's logic: They weren't able to go out this week. They can't go out this weekend, because Michael is taking Gabriel up to college for a tour that Sam knows Gabriel's not too keen on. So Sam figures Gabriel's gonna as Michael for permission either to stay home or, more exciting still, to bring Sam with them. Sam has to admit he loves the concept of a weekend upstate, complete with dorms and falling leaves... and maybe even holding hands in the open air, with nobody who knows them around to tell. He's hoping so hard that when Gabriel comes into homeroom the next morning, Sam stands up and says loudly, "Well?"

The class looks to Gabriel expectantly. Gabriel peers over his shoulder, as though Sam must be talking to someone right behind him.

He walks over when prying eyes have found other targets. "What was that about?"

"You know what," Sam says, his jaw setting in that way it does when he's frustrated. "What about that thing you were gonna look into?"

"Oh, right, that." Gabriel draws out the syllable teasingly. Sam fumes. "I haven't got a chance to check on it yet. I should know by lunchtime."

Sam's face crumples. "So it's here at school, whatever it is?"

"Yeah..." Gabriel trails off and looks at him hard. "What were you thinking?"

"Nothing!" Sam's quick to protest. He smiles wide. Inside he's drooping with disappointment. "I'm just really curious."

"Well, have patience, grasshopper," Gabriel says, patting him on the shoulder. "You shall know soon enough."

Sam doesn't think he wants to know, not now that his self-stirred fantasy has turned out to be crap. He sits silently at lunch, reading his history textbook, in part because it's a distraction and in part because Mr. Singer has another hellish test coming up.

"So about that thing," Gabriel says, dotting the corners of his mouth with a paper napkin like he's a debutante at finishing school.

"Hmm? Oh, yeah. Did you find something out?" The enthusiasm just isn't there in Sam's voice.

Gabriel takes a moment to be puzzled, then decides it's not worth it and proclaims, "It's a go! You doing anything after school?"

Sam shakes his head.

"Then meet me right back here after school's out. I have something to show you."
