"The best English teacher in the world would hardly say a word, especially to the whole class at once. She would stay out of your way, let you read all you wanted, and not try to organize any cute conversation about the motivations of the characters or the relationship between the setting and the theme. She would not keep you from writing by 'making' you write. She would sit peacefully at her desk, reading Pride and Prejudice. If you went to her, she would put her book down, smile, and consider your questions.

Unfortunately, if this teacher ever existed, she is surely fired by now, because every time the principal came in to check on her, she was not busy asking you the difference between Metaphor and Simile. She was violating the first law of teaching, which is Thou Shalt Be Busy." Llewellyn
