The Willacy County and District Attorney’s Office announced today that Daivd Rey Cazares, 52, of Matamoros, Mexico, was found guilty of possession of a controlled substance. The defendant was sentenced to 8 years in prison. On September 28, 2010 the a Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper conducted a red Toyota Tacoma for no valid inspection certificate. The Trooper made contact with the defendant, who appeared extremely nervous and avoided eye contact. The defendant consented to a search of the vehicle. Troopers located removed 2 bundles of cocaine, weighing less than 2 kilograms, hidden inside an A/C unit. The defendant confessed to agents he was to be paid $2,000 to deliver the cocaine to Houston. Once the defendant completes his prison sentence, he will be subject to being deported to Mexico. The punishment range for possession of a controlled substance is from probation to life in prison. The District Attorney’s Office will aggressively prosecute crimes of drug
trafficking and would like to thank the Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Richard Pacheco and Trooper Valente Rosas for their participation in this case. The case was prosecuted by District Attorney Bernard Ammerman and First Assistant District Attorney Scott Greenbaum.
