NEW ORLEANS SAINTS AGREE TO TERMS WITH UFA DT BRODERICK BUNKLEY

March 21, 2012

The New Orleans Saints have agreed to terms on a five-year contract with unrestricted free agent DT Broderick Bunkley. The announcement was made by Saints’ Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis.

Bunkley, an six-year veteran defensive tackle, spent the 2011 season as an integral part of the defensive line for the Denver Broncos after being acquired in a trade from the Philadelphia Eagles at the start of training camp. Anchoring the middle of the Broncos’ defense, Bunkley appeared in all 16 games for the AFC West Champions, starting 13 at the nose tackle position, while garnering 43 tackles (33 solo) and adding another six stops, one sack and one forced fumble in two postseason contests.

“We are pleased to add Broderick to our defensive line,” said Loomis. “He’s an energetic player that can contribute in stopping the run and will be a positive influence on our front four.”

The former Florida State University All-American selection was originally a first round draft choice of the Eagles in 2006 (14th overall). Bunkley, 6-2, 306, has appeared in 92 career regular season games with 65 starts and has recorded 305 tackles (179 solo), six sacks, seven pass defenses, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries. The Tampa native also has extensive postseason experience, having appeared in nine games with five starts, making 24 stops (13 solo), one sack and one forced fumble.
