Looking at both jQuery and WP ticket graphs, both make use of multi-color for each segment.
What came to mind is an alt view that would color code the segments with the components that have seen the most activity.
http://core.trac.wordpress.org/report/22?sort=component&asc=1&page=1 tells me that the raw data exists.
