“Are you having fun?” With wild rock and roll music, seductive body movement and signature smoky eyes, popular American rock and roll pretty boy Adam Lambert debut his Chinese concert in Mercedes Benz Arena last night. Answering him was deafening scream and applause from the whole arena. This night, thousands of Chinese fans rushed to the venue from all over China to witness their idol’s charisma; and they were not disappointed. Searingly passionate or icily beautiful, explosive or tender love contained, Adam, who excelled in both beat driven or motionless confession performances, conquered every fan’s heart with his charismatic, hypnotic stagecraft. Fully exhibited the superhuman power this American Idol possesses.

At 19:52, in the audience’s heightened expectation, Adam ceremonially appeared on stage in a glamorous sapphire blue suit, starting the show with ‘If I Had You’. Still the familiar leather gloves, the well-known dark blue eye shadow and the incomparable carefree stage charisma, singing ‘Naked Love’ and ‘Cuckoo’ with the driving beats, Adam constantly shook his hips and showed off his dance moves. He also greeted the audience in English: “Shanghai, what’s up? Are you having fun? Are you happy? The night is young, it’s just begun, and I hope it’ll never end!” With thunderous applause in response from the audience, the R&R pretty boy conveniently used ‘Never Close Our Eyes’ to issue his invitation of ‘do not blink’.

Not only was Adam excellent in singing, with the aura of someone in command and confident, he danced on stage without reserve. Maybe he was not the best dancer out there, but he was the most confident. The famously glamorous Adam didn’t waste any inch of the big stage. After 6 numbers, he left the stage to his back up singers. When he returned, he was in all black leather clothing that indicated his rocker status. Only when facing the passion of the audience, did he put away his ‘cool’ side and croon his classic ‘Whataya Want from Me’ & ‘Underneath’. The whole audience loudly sang along in reply to his tender loving voice.

But it didn’t end there. After the quiet ballads, Adam briefly disappeared from stage and returned yet again in a top hat and a sexy fringed sleeves jacket, heated them up with ‘For Your Entertainment’; thus started the glamorous and exciting 3rd segment of this concert. When he got high performing, he disregarded his idol image and took off his shoes. He invited the audience to interact with a call and return singing session. “Could you sing with me? Everybody! HEY YEAH!” Of course this didn’t defeat the passionate and professional level Shanghai audience.

There was previous report that Adam squeezed in some time during his busy schedule to learn to speak Chinese; that he even has a tutor for emergency remedial help. It led to the audience expecting him to greet them with some awkward Chinese or sing a few bars in indistinguishable Chinese. Although he didn’t sing in Chinese, he still gave them a surprise. Like what he did in Seoul, the R&R handsome man reinterpreted Rihanna’s ‘Stay’. Suddenly the Mercedes Benz Arena was filled with shouts of ‘ADAM!’

Even after the concert ended; fans were still unwilling to leave. They kept screaming Adam’s name. As the most eyeballs grabbing contestant in American Idol history, Adam Lambert’s success can not be replicated. He might be the runner up but he possesses an infinite halo that not even a champion can easily acquire. One year after the competition he was nominated in the Best Male Pop Vocal category. Last night, his signature stage charisma conquered the audience from this oriental country. This night, he whole audience in Mercedes Benz arena fell at only one man’s feet. It made him say sincerely and appreciatively to his Chinese audience: “THANK YOU, SHANGHAI!”
