**Quick note: I told @SmiteGame that I could help them with my mythology cause they have a game... just check them out. I will write in more detail now, and I was going to write about Zeus, but they have him in the game, so I'll go with Demeter**

Demeter, the goddess of the harvest.

When your crops grow, it is thanks to Demeter's blessing, if you angered her, your crops will fail every season. If it's spring and everything is blooming, the goddess is happy and in a good mood, if it's winter, where everything is dead and quiet, the goddess is sad and in a very bad mood. The reason being is her daughter, Persephone.

But first something about Demeter, besides being respected as the goddess of the harvest, she is really respected for being one of the gods that made Earth, so all Greeks owed their existence to her.

The kidnapping of Persephone

Demeter's daughter, Persephone, whom she had with Zeus, was the dearest thing in Demeter's life, she grew up with her mother and other gods and everything was good in her life, until Hades fell in love with her. One fine and sunny day, fine and sunny thanks to Demeter of course :p, Persephone was picking up flowers, narcissus to be exact, when the ground opened and Hades pulled her to the underworld. Hearing that her daughter has gone missing, Demeter panicked and searched everywhere for her. Filled with sorrow and grief, she was searching, day and night, east and west, north and south, the whole known land, but in vain. It was Helios who told Demeter the location of her daughter. In burning rage and fury, Demeter left Olympus disguised as an old lady, neglecting her duties and gone in service to the king of Eleusis, Keleus (or Celeus, same thing). As you can imagine, with Demeter gone, the crops didn't grow at all, and humans starved. Zeus saw this, and ordered Hades to return Persephone, cause this has gone far enough, Demeter said that not a single seed would grow, until she gets her daughter back. Hades saw that he had no choice, but he didn't want to give up Persephone just like that. He gave Persephone to eat a grain of pomegranate. That one grain was enough to bond Persephone to the underworld. Hades and Demeter had an agreement, Persephone would be 8 months with her mother, and 4 months with Hades. And so, in Greece, 8 months everything would grow and bloom, and 4 months, everything would die.

And thus, Demeter and Hades came to an agreement, and we know that as seasons. From Spring to mid-fall crops would grow, during winter everything would die. I hope that you enjoyed and learned something from this and thanks for reading.
