Dear Linda Mintle, in response to your piece on "What if Eminem's daughter dated a guy raised on his music", I have a somewhat concise list of reasons explaining why your jump to conclusions makes you argument incorrect. For starters, let's just begin by saying that I am an avid listener of Eminem's music, and have been since people like you would consider me much too young to be listening to him. Over the years, people everywhere have portrayed him to be a misogynistic, female-degrading, psychopath. Have you ever actually taken time out of your day to read the history behind the persona of Slim Shady? If you had, you would know that all of the things that he raps about while in the Slim Shady character, it is to symbolize the feelings that a lot of people have, but can't express without being judged, once again, by people like you. Obviously there are many people who have encountered thoughts where they want to do bodily harm to someone or abuse hard drugs, and you're singling out Eminem just because he has had the courage to admit it?

You think it is bad if there is someone raised listening to his music, well if that's true, wouldn't you think that it is worse to be raised by him, personally? Hailie, his daughter, has been raised for her entire life almost solely by him, and he is to this day, one of the most, (if not, THE most) praised celebrity fathers in the industry. There are people everywhere who despise Hip-Hop/Rap yet don't have to think twice about his parenting skills being far more superior to the general population of the entire world.

If you think that his music is THAT horrible for someone to be raised on, and you HAVE to play the blame game, then I suggest you start pointing fingers at the parents of today, having no interest in their children's lives and not taking any notice in their taste in music. Anyone who is a licensed family therapist or clinical social worker should know that a adolescent's taste music is quite possibly the biggest hint to everyone around them of what they're going through and is a representation of what they feel.

Taking note of the questionable lyrics Eminem has written, but failing to produce evidence of him fulfilling these negative actions is possibly your biggest mistake. Do you think he actually has put Anthrax on a tampon? Do you think he has actually murdered his ex-wife? Do you think he actually killed his cousin and drank his bloody bath water? No. Since you felt it was necessary to quote a lyric from track 13 from his album The Eminem Show, I'll quote a lyric from the song right before it.

Sing For The Moment: “That's why we sing for these kids, who don't have a thing
Except for a dream, and a fuckin' rap magazine
Who post pin-up pictures on their walls all day long
Idolize they favorite rappers and know all they songs
Or for anyone who's ever been through shit in their lives
Till they sit and they cry at night wishin' they'd die
Till they throw on a rap record and they sit, and they vibe
We're nothin' to you but we're the fuckin' shit in they eyes"

It may not be what you want to hear, but it's the truth. Like it or not, you're judging one little area of negativity which isn't exactly as true as you think it is, while ignoring the big picture of how inspirational he can be to help people get through their troubles. Eminem is the reason many people are still alive today, and if you can't appreciate the gift of saving someone's life, then I suggest you at least do some background research on the person you're about to try to degrade.

Sincerely, an 18-year old guy who was raised listening to Eminem with a high respect for women.
