Big Changes Coming to Los Angeles' 1-to-1 Computing Effort
June 30, 2014 4:52 PM
Atlanta-After a rocky first-year rollout of tens of thousands of student iPads, the Los Angeles Unified School District is preparing to make significant changes in the country's largest 1-to-1 school computing initiative. According to LAUSD officials speaking at the annual conference of the International Society for Technology in Education, being held here this week, the next wave of schools tentatively slated to receive digital devices as part of the 651,000-student district's Common Core Technology Project will first need to demonstrate both their "instructional readiness" and their preparedness to deploy the devices safely.

LA SCHOOL REPORT
JUST IN: After year of iPads only, laptops are making LAUSD debut
June 30, 2014 10:16 am
Not too long ago the iPad train barreling toward LA Unified seemed unstoppable.
At the beginning of the school year, it was a given that all district students would have an Apple device in their Millennial and Generation Z hands by the end of 2016. But after a series of very public blunders and intense scrutiny by the Common Core Technology Project Committee, the district is changing tracks.

iPads year 2: LA schools to launch teacher prep course
July 1st, 2014, 5:00am
The Los Angeles Unified school district is developing a digital course to help over 700 schools ease into its $1.3 billion technology program. Schools just getting the tables in the coming school year will select teachers, administrators and students to lead roll out. Staff will be required to complete the self-guided course in addition to in-person professional development before the computers are distributed.

Some schools will get laptops instead of iPads, says LAUSD
June 30th, 2014, 3:16pm
In a departure from a $1 billion plan to give an iPad to every student, the Los Angeles Unified School District says it will allow some high schools to provide laptops instead of the Apple tablets. The Los Angeles Times reports that 27 schools will choose from among six different laptops for their students. Contracts that will come under final review by the Board of Education would authorize the purchases at a cost not to exceed $40 million.

LAUSD looking at iPad policy switch
06/30/14, 6:34 PM
Preparing to change course on its plan to teach and test students with iPads, Los Angeles Unified’s school board Tuesday will consider spending up to $40 million on six different types of laptops chosen by 27 schools, a marked change from an earlier decision to use only one learning device. If passed, the decision puts the school’s push into the digital future on different operating systems and on multiple devices instead of one compatible system.
