Re: the claim that Akira is trans, it's bunk. Same with P4 or Dangan Ronpa, it's a case of Western ideas projected onto Japanese culture. Akira's homosexual orientation and his likeness for cross-dressing makes him think he would be more suitable as a girl, but the issue is sexuality, not gender. The most telling evidence is that, from all the Japanese reception I've seen, they refer to him as ホモ or　男の子 or 女装, with no mention of being transgender. And frankly, I consider the native speakers, with a far more innate understanding of Japanese culture and its prejudices, to understand what the company was intending more than Western players who carry their own Western-based biases.
