Sadly, it's the fact that I do know what I'm talking about that annoys him so much. And not just him.

Doctors should welcome well-informed patients - we could make their lives so much easier. Instead they seem to resent us.

They also assume that we don't truly understand the information we access online, and so we misinterpret it. True in many cases, I'm sure - but not in mine.

I've been doing this since long before the Web existed, when it was a case of nagging the reference library to get the medical journals I needed. Even now, though, I still run up against unfamiliar words, but how hard is it to type it into Google and get a comprehensive definition?

It was only recently, after about 20 years, that my GP grudgingly conceded that I do know what I'm talking about - but he's still not happy about it.
