Kang Sora Vogue Interview December 2014: Love Me Tender

~Kang Sora’s Unusual & Unique Charm~

Actress Kang Sora whose future is much more anticipated, has a gentle smile and an intense gaze at the same time. Instead of putting on a mature evening look and a wave hairstyle, she’s just wearing a plain suit with a ponytail hairdo, exuding a unique charm.

And I thought, it was ‘Ahn Young-I’ who has entered the studio during the photo shoot session. With a knee-length skirt and a striped shirt along with a tight ponytail hairdo, she looked just exactly the same as ‘Ahn Young-I’; the new employee from One International that she plays as in the drama ‘Misaeng’. She was actually in the middle of filming for her drama near the Seoul Train Station, but she had to sneak out briefly to attend an ‘outside duty’ in Gangnam; the photo shoot location for this <Vogue>’s pictorial. Actress Kang Sora that has shown up in the studio was lively and cheerful as much as ‘Ahn Young-I’ herself. In the makeup room, she was brushing her teeth and she even romping around in the studio with her high-heels on. She was like a new employee whose energy and earnestness is no less to anybody. Even though the pictorial shooting started at 7pm and continued until dawn, she didn’t show any sign of being tired. Perhaps she has the same stamina as Ahn Young-I who hangs on mere vending machine coffee and a cup ramen alone as her strength aid to tolerate and endure working overtime at night.

“I think we need to sprinkle some more of the fallen leaves”, “Please set these wooden chairs to line up in one side,” (she was just happily giving a few opinions for the photo shoot). However, the pictorial’s concept on that day wasn't simply focus on the energetic and lively mood only. It was a pictorial that meant to express both feminine and modern look of Giorgio Armani’s apparels at the same time through the cold background mood of winter. But Kang Sora was no longer the 'Ahn Young-I' who is being crushed here and there by others, because she has transformed into a posh leading lady on her urban night out. The dry twigs on the floor and the fallen leaves that were scattered all over the greyish studio called for a heavy silence. “Shall we go into the first cut?” As the photographer gave his ‘start’ sign, the camera shutter went clicking. Kang Sora sat on top of a tree trunk and she has completely wiped off the smile on her face in no time. Kang Sora was posing in a black dress embroidered with tiny sequins that was complemented with shy blush tinged makeup. There was no ‘Ahn Young-I’ the new employee during that moment, only actress Kang Sora that gave cold urbanite vibe.

In the beginning of the photo shoot, Kang Sora seemed a little stiff. And it was actually a late night a day before the CSAT exam (**The photo shoot started around 7pm of 12th Nov until early morning of 13th Nov. Students have to sit for CSAT on 13th Nov this year in Korea). The frigid cold and strong wind (the temperature dropped to ºC that night) that almost felt like a ‘winter storm’ could be the reason why (she seemed a little stiff) but in Kang Sora’s circumstances, rather than intolerable winter weather, it was due to the rough condition that she’s facing lately. She has to keep shooting for drama 'Misaeng’ every day with the exception of Thursday, but with each passing day, the amount of night shooting is not small either. ‘Working for 6 days per week along with the obligation to work overtime at night’ is the reality of an actress’s life. Thanks to the high ratings of the drama, she received many calls from people that request to meet her. And what’s more, 'Ahn Young-I' the intern employee character that she plays; who was proud and stately in the beginning is now spending hellish days these days in the drama. Because Ahn Young-I has to overcome the hurdle with her high-nosed superiors every day over and over again, I feel bad when I look at her (Ahn Young-I).

But then, Kang Sora too was a ‘new employee’ herself. Debuted through a TVN’s drama ‘Rude Miss Young-Ae’ in 2010 (referring to her drama debut), she is now a 5-year old actress that didn’t blame on her tiredness when the atmosphere became heavy. Every moment Kang Sora responded to the photo shoot by being straightforward with her firm tone and judgment. Referring to dried flower petals ornament on her hair, she cracked a joke by asking “Is this look supposed to give the feeling of being tumbled and buried in flower bed?”, and when the editor said, “Pure natural makeup seems to be the prettiest makeup on you” about her natural makeup, “No, I look the most awful in this type of makeup,” was what she replied humbly to lower herself. The photographer asked, “Usually, you look prettier on which side of your face?” “Today is the right side, I think!” said she after making a quick assessment on herself. Kang Sora is a skilled and all-rounder new actress that possesses a sense of humour and humbleness within her.

And it was Kang Sora’s delightful energy that led the photo shoot on that day. Dressed in a light mint tube top dress, she said “How about turning on a few romantic music?” and she requested to choose for background music to set up the mood. Pointing at the dried flower ornament on her hair, she suggested “How about if I raise my hand once?” When referring indirectly to Ahn Young-I’s work life in the drama ‘Misaeng’, she said it was the second and the third string proposal (plan B and C) that made a certain whole thoroughly prepared project. We also talked about the thorough PPT scene in the drama and thanks to that, Kang Sora’s expression that looked a little bit nervous in the beginning became more relax naturally as time goes by. Standing on top of the tree-like wooden box could be slightly uncomfortable but even so, she just twisted her body around freely. She even did the styling for the black robe-cut coat herself and was fully engaged in the photo shoot.

That was how all the 8 cuts of the photo shoot ended and actress Kang Sora returned to the guise of Ahn Young-I once again. She took off the high heels, the fancy dress and the white hat with mesh ornate on her hair and she put on the ‘One International’ usual uniform back which was the same skirt and shirt with a scarlet red thick winter jumper. Watching the sight of her back as she was heading for her drama shooting at the Seoul Train Station, I was thinking that actress Kang Sora should have a short break as she has been working hard for 6 days a week and for this photo shoot as well. It was a shooting to highlight the winter night, the great fashion taste even on cold chilly day and also to evoke the romance feeling and the romantic ideal in mind. I hope that this photo shoot would be some kind of a short break for our 'Ahn Young-I' and I’m glad that it turned out to be a beautiful pictorial that filled with energy!
