Dressing changes are always painful no matter who does them (the wounds don't like being disturbed), but DIY is much less so.

I do exactly the same as the nurses would - left leg take off the old dressing, flush with saline, clean and debride, dry and re-dress. Right leg ditto but ulcer gets a scrub with antibacterial soap - as much fun as it sounds - then washed in a bucket of warm water, dried, debrided and redressed.

Of all that, all the nurses normally do is re-dress, I do the rest before they arrive. The end result is still I lot less painful if I also re-dress.
