For anyone still wondering what stems are:

Do you remember that What Do You Mean/Ghost Town remix that Adam shared? You may remember that the remixer actually layered the whistle tune over Bieber's song. It would have been impossible to do this using the original Ghost Town track, because in the original GT track, there's also a deep house beat under the whistle. So how did this remixer get the whistle tune alone? (Did he whistle it himself? LOL.)

The answer is, he used a stem. Basically, a stem is like a single track that was created in the studio. You may think of it as the recording of one instrument. So perhaps, a vocal stem + a bass drum stem + a hi-hat stem + a piano stem = the song. But in modern music, there's alot more than just a few stems. For example, in ALN, there are a total of 6 vocal stems, and 13 other instrumental stems. When played at all once, they basically play ALN as you hear it.

Usually, stems don't make it out of the studio. But they are given to remixers to be used in their remixes. You can imagine that remixers would be more efficient with the individual vocal and instrumental tracks, as they have more to play around with. Usually, they are never released to the public and are only exclusively given to these remixers, due to intellectual property reasons. However, once in a while, artists and their labels do launch public remixing competitions like this one, and hence put the stems of the song online for all to listen to and use.

Now, just in case you're wondering, no, Warner and RCA have not released any other stems of Adam's older songs. So how did that guy who mashed up Bieber and Adam get hold of the whistle stem in GT? Simple, Warner Music gave it exclusively to him to use it in his mashup -- for promotional purposes :)
