Orwell got a lot right but he got one massive thing wrong. He was a product of an essentially homogenous ethnic society with a strict caste system (one to which Britain will still not admit). Frankly, I'd say Huxley hit closer to the mark. And he missed too, for the same reason.
The USA is and always has been a heterogenous society and fiercely devoted to that. yes, even while slaughtering the indigenous population. Even while generationally enslaving Africans. Even while keeping women in a form of perpetual indentured servitude. Even during those times, we have been a diverse quilt, using that diversity as a bulwark against the predations of the rest of the world and, sometimes, from our own people inside. Confederacy, I'm looking right at you.
A vocal segment of our society has always hated that but, in every instance, EVERY instance, it is precisely that heterogenous mishmash of people that has saved us.
And we will save us again.
But we must be RELENTLESS in calling these fuckers out. Every lie. no matter how small, must be called out, every time it's uttered, in every venue.
Every "journalist" who coddles these assholes and fails to do their job as our eyes and ears to the truth, to the facts, must be excoriated until they either start performing their proper function or are run out of their profession on rails. We have no time or room for Vichy Journalism.
NO quarter can be given to the racism, sexism, religious bigotry and jingoism of Trump and his deplorable followers. When they lie (which is always.) we hit back with facts. When they wiggle, trying couch everything in the realm of political opinion, we block every exit with hard FACTS.
They will hate this and they will never concede but it will force them to admit what this is actually about for them. Which is they want a White World, Run by White Men Who Do Not Sleep with Other Men. Every woman in her place, Every brown or golden or red person in theirs and that place is a coffin or on our knees. That's what they want. Like they want oxygen and money, they want this.
Because they had it. For centuries. That's over. This Trump nonsense is part of the last gasp of that era and its death throes will be nasty. But make no mistake, they are death throes.
Will we survive them? Maybe not. Trump could be the nation's or the world's suicide but we do NOT go quietly. If the shadow is our end, we make them pay for every inch we slide into the dark.
My parents always told me to stand up to bullies. They didn't tell me I would win every fight but that I should make damned sure the bully knew, if he wanted to step on me that day, he'd better bring a lunch and some gatorade because bullying ME was going to be work.
Trump is a bully.
Just one more rich asshole, born to privilege who thinks that his money, his gender and the color of his skin make him superior. We gladiators know that the only superiority or equality to be found is in the ring, where things are equal.
He has money. We have numbers. Bring it.
All of us or none of us.
