Short reply to statements by Henry de Valence (@hdevalence)

* De Valence's post severely misrepresents several events and leaves out essential parts.

* In April 2016 de Valence told me that he was uncomfortable working with Appelbaum based on a story he heard and believed. I agreed that he would not need to work on projects with him but requested him to maintain professional interaction.

* De Valence never revealed the eye drop story to me. He did not tell me of any firsthand bad experience, e.g., he told me that Lovecruft felt threatened but did not say this about himself.

* To this date I have not seen the complaint email he says he sent to HR.

* I had a long chat with de Valence during the welcome reception of the summer school in Croatia at a table next to the buffet in plain sight of everybody. Our discussion extended past the end of the reception and eventually we relocated to the space outside the reception room. The characterization of the meeting which he gives in his blog post is in contradiction with his statements during the meeting, which included that he was very happy that we talked. During a later meeting he asked why I had asked some detailed questions and then accepted my explanation, saying that it made sense.

* His descriptions of the interaction with Lovecruft are even further off the truth.
