117. Smaller and Smaller Circles (2017)
Rating: 7.0

Disclaimer: I haven’t read the novel. (And I guess I should have)

What I liked about this film was that it pictured the reality perfectly. From the establishing shots around Manila, Payatas, to depicting the real attitude of the media and the people when it comes to news, the politics of it all, the corruption of it all and of course, the crimes - child abuse, murders, serial killers, the dark syndicates that is most probably really happening in the country. It was a good adaptation of the novel however, at some point in the film, I felt very detached (and it’s not a good thing for me if I get detached while watching a film). I guess it’s probably because I haven’t read the novel but it should not be the case. To me, it lacked more POVs and more depth from the characters. It was kind of hard to decipher from just a very one-sided POV. And because of that, I have all these questions in my head that I think will be solved once I read the book. But I appreciate the production for this. the cinematography was really good and it was well-directed. It just fell flat on the story-telling.
