Kinatay (2009)
Rating: 8.5

This film was one hell of a ride, figuratively and literally, for the audience and the protagonist in the story. I interpret this whole theme as a huge irony to the protagonist’s life as a rookie police student. The same as Ma Rosa, the whole hand-held camera technique was used to instigate that fear and anxiety the protagonist feels. The whole car ride scene was one example because the camera was held from the protagonist’s POV at the back of the car. The anxiety it gave me watching that. Another scene that gave me the chills was the whole bus station scene. It was so brillantly done and it definitely captured me in for a moment like I was right behind him panicking and being afraid and trying to escape the situation. Another aspect that added to the whole experience was the sound and score and the intense use of dark lighting. This film just sucks you in despite the very disturbing themes of rape, dismemberment, corruption, drugs etc.. I also really liked the ending scene which leaves you imagining all the thoughts going through his head. Definitely flawless acting from the whole cast. It was a whole different Coco Martin experience for me.
